Backpacking with Contact Lenses or Eyeglasses?
July 30, 2007
Long distance hikers should be aware of all weight that goes into their packs. One makes many sacrifices in order to keep our packs light. I wear contacts everyday when off the trail, and getting a pair of backup glasses soon. Include a pair of sunglasses and now I am up to a nice bag of toiletries to haul around the woods. How many of you wear contacts for long distance hikes? Is cleaning them a hassle on the trail? I weighed the options:
Contact Lense Solution and case: 13oz - 14oz
Eyeglasses: 1oz - 2oz
Sunglasses: 1oz - 2oz
I am thinking glasses with perscription sunglasses! But for those of you who can’t stop putting dirty fingers in your eyes, check out this:

Make your own Sleeping Bag Technology -70F to +50F
July 27, 2007

Peter Hutchinson Designs has some of the most sophisticated arctic and high elevation sleeping bags in the world. Way overkill for any long distance trails here in the US, but check out their documentation and science behind the material usage and overall design. Check out PHD’s collection of technical documents including: What is Down?, Down vs Synthetic Insulation, and more…
They have developed an awesome software application built in into their website . A quick search on eBay for their products results in 0 results for both the .com and .co.uk (company is based in England).

SGT Rock’s Stove Comparison
July 19, 2007

Ready to buy that lightweight stove? There are way to many choices! I have chosen the Optimus Nova Multi-Fuel Stove, I wanted something lightweight but most of all, clean. I don’t want to mess with fuel spills and the purging system on the Optimus worry free! Review is on the way. Before I purchased I researched every outfitter and story about stoves I could get my hands on including SGT Rock. If you haven’t met SGT Rock, it’s due. He has put together some awesome information at his “Hiking H.Q.” website.

Are you “rocking out” on the rock?
July 15, 2007

While I am planning my PCT thru hike in ‘08, I am torn between bringing my Nano along with me for inspiration & motivation. Anyone that knows me, knows I am a HUGE music fan. But can I keep a charge on any ipod for a length of time where I can really take advantage of the benefits? I am going to try! The extra weight of the Nano, headphones and charging cord is completely worth listening to my favorites tunes in what I hope to be the most beautiful place I am ever going seen.
Looking for more benefits from your music beyond motivation? JogTunes.com has put together some killer play lists that contain music based on your desired heart rate, sweet!
So What do you think?
Salomon Speedcross 2 Trail-Running Shoes
July 14, 2007
I just purchased a pair of Salomon Speedcross 2 Trail-Running Shoes. I spent about 4 hours on a dirt trail today with them, and I must say, I am impressed. At first the removable insoles were scaring me, it felt a bit off. But they are the ultimate in comfort! Everything from the simple drawstring lace to the aggressive nobs. If you are into lightweight (these babies are 20oz for the pair), and looking for a light trail running or even hiking shoe (or light boot), TRY THESE ON!

Hiking Shoe - GoLite Spike Trail
July 13, 2007
This shoe from GoLite is the reason for my recent trip to REI. I wanted to try it on, run, and climb on anything I could, to give it a thorough shake down, before I purchased ($115.00, REI). I was so disappointed…I tried on an 11,12 & 13, neither could I get to fit just right. Even with manipulating the fit with the included custom inserts (to adjust the insoles and fitting). It seemed like there was more room then necessary in the toe area. Another issue, which comes from the reason I originally got excited over this pair. The “Interlocking Trail Claws” seemed to be pushed up through my foot when I climbed on uneven ground. I can easily see this as being an issue on rocking ground. SO what did I get? After trying on 4 different pairs, each in 3 different sizes. I did buy a hiking shoe that I am very happy with!
