Backpacking Chef: Nutrional Hiking Food

When you are burning 6,000 calories a day hiking through deserts, climbing mountains and balancing a bedroom on your back, it’s critical that you consume enough calories, vitamins and nutrients to replenish what you sweat out. Besides water, our bodies need protein, sugars, carbs, and fat to survive. The rule of thumb is carrying food that either be eaten raw or combined with other ingredients meet a 150 calories an ounce. That is SO hard to combine; it leaves you with high calorie snacks that lack nutrition. I have spent a great deal of time researching ingredients that go into my recipes, combined is a list of high calorie & nutritional value.

This book is essential for anyone getting into Lightweight Backpacking and Camping. It doesn’t necessarily give you specifics or tell you exactly what to get, even better it shows you how to choose the right gear for the right person for the right conditions. There is a fantastic section on almost category of gear from sleeping systems to footwear. First aid, hiking with kids and one of my favorite sections efficient hiking. In that section in goes through a day of a hike and records every action, which includes about 20 steps just to get to your water bottle…
Great book…Fantastic reference.

Granola Bars - 146 Cal/Oz

Here is a simple, high calorie treat to eat on the trail. I have made this recipe twice, with much success.
* Preheat Oven to 375 Degrees
* coat 9×13 with non-stick spray
Ingredients:
- * 2 oz. Almonds
- * 2 oz. Soy Nuts
- * 2 0z. Sunflower Seeds
Instructions:
- * Chop nuts and seeds in blender till pea sized
- * combine oats, spices, in large bowl
