Backpacking Blowtorch
I’ve been using my XGK EX Stove for the last 4 months, in that time I’ve spent a total of 3 weeks on the trail from the Sea of Cortez to Seattle, Wa. The weight of the stove is good, not as light as others but a good compromise considering the range of fuels it will burn. The burner works well with all three fuel cells available from MSR and burn time is good as well. Over all it’s a good choice if your looking for a high out put multi-fuel stove. The one down side is there is no simmer function, it’s full throttle or nothing. However all I do is boil water with it. Lastly it’s louder than any stove I have ever used, but that lets you know it’s working.

Greatest multi-fuel for the Price!
This stove is bomb-proof. It’s more efficient than canister stoves in a wider range of circumstances. Ever had half-empty canisters with no more accelerant after a winter trip Never waste fuel again with this stove! It boils fast and furious, and can go from a rolling boil to a simmer instantly. That’s right, you can cook angel-hair pasta, rice, potatoes… virtually anything you can pack with this stove. I have been using it for about a year now and have had no problems.
Very Versatile Stove — Solid!
Have owned this stove for several years and used in all weathers - from 5 degrees and snow to driving rain - and it has performed flawlessly. Maintenance has been minimal and temperature control is outstanding — and validated by my pastry-chef-camp- pal! Stable, relatively light weight and very fuel efficient. The only items causing this to fall short of a perfect score are the relative frailty of the pump (shattered my first one with a short fall off a rock) and the loudness of the stove when on full afterburner. Otherwise, though, top-notch!
incredibly great stove
on my last backpacking trip, i was able to borrow my friend’s dragonfly, and while i probably will not be able to afford one, i was incredibly impressed by its SOLID performance. even despite my stupidity, i was able to get it started and cruising every time without a problem, even in strong winds and dampness. it boiled water quickly, and the simmer function works very well. my only qualm is the stove’s size - if you’re going to be just boiling water or doing other super simple cooking, you’d be better off with a smaller, lighter, and cheaper MSR stove. great though if you’re a backcountry chef and like doing fancy things with your cuisine. either way - highly recommended.
BUY THIS STOVE
I’ve had the dragonfly for 6 years. During those 6 years I’ve tested and sold other stoves from Vaude, Snow Peak, Coleman etc. I have yet to find a stove that is as durable and versatile. Great temp control. EASY SET-UP. Use it all year long. Handles several fuels. I cannot say enough. Time and time again I come back to using this stove. Electronic starters on other stoves are nothing more than a gimmic. Don’t get wrapped up in them. They do not work half the time anyway. Fuel canisters are a pain in the butt. You always end up with half used canisters laying around. With the dragonfly you can refill your fuel bottles. You’ll end up happy you bought this stove, do not let price deter you.
Great little stove!
I just took my first trip with this guy- light weight, sips the fuel and heats up quick. Very, very pleased with it. Make sure to buy a fuel bottle to go with it.

great, hot and light
This is a great stove and I would only buy an MSR stove for any kind of serious backcountry usage. The stove doesn’t simmer in the sense of your kitchen stove (at all), but it’s not too bad compare to the torch-like power of other MSR stoves (good tip from SandyBeach to use low pressure). But great for all conditions, boils water FAST and still can cook normal food on it too. Very light, field maintainable and you can be sure that MSR stands behind it’s products — I’ve got lots of their gear and have only good things to say about their products and customer service! And no, I don’t work for them… just a big fan! Great stove!
ok
light. Does not simmer. otherwise fine.
Great Little Stove
The Simmerlite is a very versatile and powerful little stove. Also very light and compact. One trick that MSR doesn’t really tell you about is to use very low fuel pressures (about 5 pumps or less)for a delicate flame. With a low enough flame I can cook perfect omelets on this stove. Burner size is good for medium to larger pots. May be almost too big for individual cooksets.

The Mountain Hardwear Rock Sack Bivy is an ideal ultralight shelter for alpine and big-wall climbing. Small ledges in the mountains give you few options for setting up your shelter. With the Rock Sack Bivy, all you need is enough room to lay down. This pole-less shelter is made of ultralight Gore-Tex PacLite and weighs only 1lb 2oz. Two small zippered ports at the waist allow you to be tied in at either side, so you don’t roll off your ledge at night. This Mountain Hardwear bivy sack also has a UVX window on the hood to keep the inside a little brighter and let you check the weather without opening your shelter.

all right as emergency shelter
This Bivy is fine if you don’t want to use it on day-to-day basis. The hood is kind of narrow to get in (guess it is really waterproof for that). It is difficult to enter with a bulky sleeping bag and once inside you don’t have a lot of space to close the sleeping bag and adjust the cords. It might be alright during the summer with a smaller sleeping bag - I haven’t tested that yet. How ever I am not impressed with it during winter trips.

Black Diamond Winter Bivy Sack
I just returned from using my BD winter bivy sack while cycling through France for 2 weeks and it worked very well. I DID NOT USE A TENT, ONLY THE BIVY SACK. It is very roomy and lightweight! As with all water resistent, breathable materials, it allows for condensation to form in cool temps when the humidity is high but it dries very quickly. It worked very well in the rain and was easy to get in and out of. I am very pleased with it. Thank you!
Just as advertised.
Last winter I did a winter camp in yellowstone and my down bag was drenched from the condensation by the end of the week. This past trip I used the Black Diamnod/Bibler winter bivy sack on the outside and a western mountains vapor sack on the inside and my bag remained dry thoughout a week of winter camping. The winter bivy sack is extremely lightweight and compressable. It keeps your bag dry from mist, moisture and condensation (although I only used it iside the tent, and I’m not sure how much the vapor sack was responsible for the dry bag this year). The downside: It only has a horizontal zipper accross the upper TOP portion of the bag which can restrict movement/motion. If the zipper extended down the right side (to match my sleeping bag) then it would be a 5 star item!
Best for minimalist, fast and light climbing
This is very bare bones but does the job. There’s is nothing but the windproof/water-resistant fabric and a very light 2-way zipper across the shoulders. I’ve used it once so far in 15F dry weather surrounding my 20F sleeping bag at 11,000ft on San Gorgonio. It’s so small and light that you can pack it anywhere and it makes a good conversation piece.
Great Bivy!
I highly recommend the Bibler Winter Bivy Sack…it is the ultralight hiker’s dream (9 ounces, verfified on my scale)! I broke the bivy in during a hike through the White Mountains, NH in miserable conditions (sleet, snow, freezing rain). Paired with my SilPoncho, I spent the night warm and dry. The bivy did a great job of keeping my bag dry from any splashing rain, but I did find that I had to open the zipper on occasion to relieve some of the condensation. Despite this, I found the Epic shell to be quite breathable (C’mon, I have yet to experience any "waterproof/breathable" piece of gear that didn’t have at least a little bit of a condensation issue…so I’m realistic in my expectations). This product gets my highest endorsement for the ultralight hiker.
Bibler Winter Bivy Sack
I was looking for something light weight for winter climbing. On a scale from 1 to 5, this winter bivy is definetly a 4++. Extremely light weight, easy to enter and exit and it kept my bag absolutely dry after two nights in snow caves. Nice price too. I can’t think of anything more I could ask. Highly recommended. Backcountry gets a 5.0 for service, I had the bag within 3 days of ordering and I live in Asia. Can’t go wrong ordering from these guys.

Picture it. Summer camping under the stars, a warm breeze blowing across your face, the soft, melodic, soothing buzz of mosquitoes say what That’s right, thanks to the Outdoor Research Bug Bivy now you can sleep outside, under the open sky, and your only thought of bugs will be how lovely they sound as you drift off to never-never land. This ultra-light, no-see-um mesh bivy has a Hydroseal-200 coated taffeta floor to protect you from ground moisture and rocky debris. Meanwhile the mesh will, need we say it, protect you from debris of the airborne, buzzing, pernicious ilk. The OR Bug Bivy features a shock-corded Delrin pole that conveniently holds the mesh off of your face so you can saw logs unobstructed all night long. Patented sleeping-pad straps fix the bivy to your pad so you don’t spend the night slip-sliding away, and a small internal mesh pocket conveniently holds those little items you need near at hand. One end-opening zipper seals the deal.

Difficult to use
It was a great idea but the design was not carefully thought out. The zipper should have been side mounted and not on the head of the bivy…the foot of the bivy should have some structural support frame like the head of the bivy, instead it just collapses over your feet and I was stung by bug through the bivy because it was touching my legs instead the screen should be propped up…Very light weight and easy to carry but not very comfortable, effective or easy to get in or out…

Use the lightweight, waterproof Outdoor Research Aurora Bivy when you travel solo in the backcountry. The Aurora Bivy features Gore-Tex Respiration+ fabric, a waterproof, windproof, vapor-permeable material that Gore-Tex made for sleep systems. The snow or rain can’t get into your bivy, but the moisture from your breath and your perspiration can escape. Outdoor Research gave this bivy mesh netting, so bugs don’t bite you after you’ve gone to bed. Loops on the Aurora let you stake it down or use guy lines to hold it down in high winds. An internal mesh pocket near your head lets you stash small items such as your headlamp or pocket knife. This bivy sack, which has no poles, weighs about 1.5 pounds ideal for traveling light.

killer sac
i perspire relatively lightly. after a night of light snow, and the storm flap only covering my head (not zipped), i had very little condensation inside the sac come morning. my buddy sleeping in an older sac and of less quality, arose with significant moisture on his sleeping bag, (he sweats a lot) it has easy access and zips well. i appreciate the no see-um bug mesh. it would be nice to have a window in the storm flap to see the stars, snow or whatever. overall, i’m quite pleased with this product, enough that the use of my tent is now limited

For the Lightsabre Bivy, Black Diamond took the burly Bibler Tripod Bivy’s design and put it together with the lightest, most packable materials they could find. The Epic fabric that makes up the Lightsabre’s body is highly water resistant, good in everything but a flat-out downpour, and breathable so you don’t have to contend with drippy condensation inside. A mesh window above your head eliminates the dreaded bivy claustrophobia attack without exposing your skin to ravenous insects. DAC featherlite poles and a silnylon floor strike a balance between weight savings and the strength necessities of a reliable shelter. If you’re shaving ounces from everything in your pack, or space is a concern (IE: two saddle bags to live out of) the Lightsabre Bivy is the fair weather solution. For rough, wet, or extreme conditions check out its big brother, the Bibler Tripod Bivy.

Lightsabre Bivy
Went on 5 day 50 mile section hike on AT in VA…used this bivy 4 times. While I loved the weight, I did find it somewhat difficult to get in and out of this bivy. The head pole was curved down to help shed rain, but found the zippers did not go down as far from my head area as I would like (sure to save weight), so I had to wedge myself as far up into the head area, and then curl myself into a tight ball to work my feet out of the bivy. I am only 5′11", and felt that if the zippers would extend another foot this would have made all the difference to me. I plan to carry my clip flashlight on my next section hike because of this.
OK for quick and light
I used this bivy for a 5 day backpacking trip through the Sierra Nevadas and I am now looking for something more rugged. Its great if you are looking for sheer lightness and summertime use. I am only 5′3" and it was hard for me to get in & out of because of the short zipper and head overhang, I’m sure it would be even tougher for a tall man. It was waterproof (though I had to seamseal all seams myself). My other complaint is there was a ton of condensation on the inside of the bivy in the a.m. (even with the front wide open during sleep).
Super light- Cozy at night
As an old mountaineer, explorer and gear head, I do extensive research and purchase the best product for the $$$. I expect the best out of my toys and this sack performed superbly. Last fall 04, Scott and I embarked on the greatest "Motorcycle Mountaineering" exploration ever done to date (that we know of anyway). We call it the "7 Days & 7 Nights Super Loop". Over 1,000 dirt miles of single/double track mixed with some narly jeep trails. This secret route is part of an on site dirt-bike adventure I have been exploring for 10 years from Mexico thru the Rockies to Canada. Now keep in mind, that being compact and light is paramount when riding this kind of sick endurance adventure. Anyway, while riding at 9,000-11,550 feet for 12+ hours, we would find ourselves exhausted, and ready for bivi. We encountered freezing nighttime temperatures in nothing more than Black Diamond’s Lightsabre bivi, Thermarest’s Prolite 3 pad and an awesome ultra compact Mountain Hardware’s Phantom 3 bag. This bivy is lighter and more compact than any I have found. It performed well in the unexpected snow storm, rain and even in the heat of the desert. It’s dome sets up easily and has lots of headroom and thanks to the mesh feature, the mosquitoes went hungry. What more can I say. Try it you’ll like it!!! J Hof.
Boo on the Lightsabre bivy.
I really had a difficult time getting in and out of the darn thing and I am only 5′8". I am disappointed with the inability to adjust the tent part of the bivy. It would be much better if the angle of the opening was adjustable for star gazing. As it is, I felt cut off from the great outdoors. It also trapped condensation. I’m on the look out for something better.
Black Diamond Light Saber Bivy
This is the best Bivy I have ever been in. Amazingly light, Easy to set up. Careful you don’t bump your head on the pole getting in. Haven’t tried it in the rain…yet. need to offer a footprint for it to protect the bottom.

Product Reviews
mountain hardwear conduit sl bivi.
This bivi bag has been used on a scottish walking trip where an overnight bivi was required, as you would expect it rained heavily but the bivi bag kept me very dry with very very little condensation on the inside so the breathable conduit sl fabric performed excellently. The rain just runs off it with not a drop getting through. If you want a very light very waterproof bivi then this is for you.
M.H. Conduit SL Bivy
After purchasing the Black Diamond Winter bivy that uses Nextec’s Epic fabric, I decided to compare it to the Mountain Hardware bivy that uses the Conduit SL fabric because of the condensation that I experienced inside. They both seemed to breath equally during my comparison in 50% humidity and 55 degree night time temps. The careful design of the Mtn. Hrdwr. bivy seemed to be more waterproof, versatile and comfortable. On my recent Sierra Trek, I liked the full length side zipper (opposed to a shoulder zip) that matches any post 1998 #8 YKK zipper. It made sleeping more comfortable because I was able to open the zipper at my feet or head to cool & vent efficiently and I could get in & out more easily. The hood fit snugly around my bag’s with a drawstring cinch (as opposed to a zipper). The M.H. bivy’s seams are taped and the floor is much more waterproof than Nextec’s fabric. I would recommend adding the scant 9 ounces for the extra comfort & protection.
I take it everywear
This thing has become my sleeping bag s new skin. Just zip it on and never worry about water again. I’ve used it in the winter and summer in the mountains and on the coast. This thing makes your down sleeping bag rock solid. One thing I learned is just put it on your bag before you leave and save some room in your pack.
Nice , but…
Good bivy, especially if you have a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag that zips to it. A little heavy if you want the minimum. I’m 6′, and it was too short. Also, when I put it over my old Marmot Snow Goose Sleeping Bag, it got way too compressed. I sent it back.
Just Okay
The Conduit SL Bivy kept me dry, except for my face or whatever part of me was not tucked inside. If I had a second chance, I would purchase a bivy that kept the bivy off my face.

The best of its class and very breathable
I have spent some good time in many different bivies but none can compare to this one. Extremely breathable and totally waterproof. A very durable fabric and the tie-in points are an important feature when needed. Not too tight or too wide, just right. A minimalist bivy with some breathing room. Only complaint is not as durable as some other fabrics but will hold up to tons of abuse.
