The Gregory G Pack gets a complete update for 2005. This minimalist pack is lightweight, streamlined and delivers only the essentials. Designed for the backpackers who know how to pack, and look to carry loads up to 30 pounds, the G Pack is a solid, comfortable bag. The Exo Frame and Wraptor stabilizer ensure a smooth ride. A padded back with removable stay and framesheet saves 9oz. A supportive Gullwing waist-belt carries extremely comfortably.

Product Reviews

Great
This is the best ultralight backpack ever! It came to either this pack or the granite gear vapor trail. My 2 friends have the vapor trail and I like this pack way better. I hiked over 10 miles a day, for 4 days straight through rough mountain terrain and my load was carried very well. My pack weighed about 25-30 lbs. The waste belt has mesh zipper pockets so I store power bars or granola bars since the bars flex with the pockets around my waste. The big mesh outer pockets are great for storing extra gear that you re too lazy to put in your pack. I keep my rain jacket and map there for easy access. Also, if I have any wet gear the mesh pockets allow it to dry while I’m hiking. The 2 water bottle pockets are deep and held my 1-liter Nalgene bottles very well. The harness and straps that stabilize the pack are the only kind I ve seen like it. When you bend and twist your torso the harness at the bottom moves to adjust the load better and gives you more flexibility. Also, this pack barely weights anything compared to other packs.

G Pack For Climbing
I like how lightweight this pack is, and the price is very reasonable. It would be even better if it was more rugged, but that’s the trade-off for lightweight. I use this pack mostly for climbing weekends, like at Joshua Tree and Tahquitz in SoCal. It has just enough room for rack and fluids and snacks. It can carry coiled up rope on top too, by strapping down under the top lid. But most of times I don’t mention that, just saying there’s not enough room for the rope and therefore someone else would have to carry to that. This backpack size is perfect!

Great Pack
this past summer my dad and i hiked the 115 miles of the AT in Shenandoah Nat Park. i used this pack and it worked amazingly. we were doing about 20 miles a day… depending on weather and terrain… and it held my 28 pound load perfectly. the suspension system is amazing and distributes the weight very well among your shoulders, hips and back. though the fabric may seem thin and puny it is super tough and very resiliant when it takes a hit. if your not a member of the pack everything u can find crowd then this pack has enough room for your gear and can bear the weight well. the mesh outer pocket is very good for essentials u need at your fingertips and the pockets on the hipbelt hold snacks and other small items very easily. the top section of the pack is surprisingly roomy and even when full contours well with the main compartment. bottom line: its roomy, comfortable, strong, my number 1 choice as a short term expedition pack, and perfect for everyone from novice to expert

Umm…
I used this pack this weekend on an overnighter, and well it was good I guess. I had heard that the "ultralight" packs were good what they were designed for and not much else; this was my experience. The G pack is super light, maybe even ultralight. It carried what I needed, maybe it carried a little more than I needed. The weight I saved by using the G pack was lost by me just packing more crap that I didn’t need. While the G pack saves on weight it lacks luxury. My back and shoulders still hurt like hell. I thought it was cool that even though the packs main compartment wasn’t huge Gregory added the out side netting stuff. I could fit all my essentials in the main compartment and then every thing else on the out side. I put one of my sweet ass moonstone shell in the netting stuff on the hike up and I think that zipper must have rubbed or some thing cause when I got home there, there was a hole in the ultra light fabric where my coat was. I think this pack is good if not great for what it was designed for but you may have to re-think some of your ideas about backpacking before using it.

The Gregory Whitney Backpack is built to carry loads of gear in comfort and designed so you can find it all. Twin side pockets provide entry from the sides as well as from the top, front, and bottom. The Whitney’s packed with features that become more delicious with every passing mile: a hydration sleeve, canted bottle holders, V-pull compression straps, and a convertible fanny pack top pocket. Like all Gregory packs, the Whitney’s fit and comfort are really the secret to its popularity. An adjustable waistbelt and rotating shoulder harness move to accommodate the angle of your hips, the slope of your shoulders, and the width of your neck. They work together with two aluminum stays and a floating framesheet to deliver the cushiest ride this side of a Cadillac.

Product Reviews

Gregory Whitney Backpack
Whoa! Comfortable, comfortable, comfortable. I just purchased the Whitney and although I thought it was kinda pricey, now I can see why. The waist belt, shoulder harness, and shock absorbing chest strap are all designed with comfort, and more importantly, support in mind. The only reason this backback didn’t get a "5" in my book is because the barn door side pockets are kinda funky. I don’t understand why Gregory put the compression straps over the tops of the side bags!! Also the front panel pocket is smaller than I anticipated. However the comfort trade-off is more than worth it (note: I’m an organization freak). Highly recommend this pack primarily due to comfort/support; I could have hiked double the miles I’m used to just because I couldn’t feel the Whitney on my back!!!! I can tell after just one weekend in the Smokies that this puppy will last forever!!!!

Gregory Whitney Backpack
Excellent pack and features. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Having a tall and lean body type, I found that I needed medium length belt pads (recommended for a 34 inch max waist/hip measurement) vs. the large length belt pads (recommended for a 34 inch min waist/hip measurement) that come standard with the large backpack frame size. Gregory Customer Service was helpful and very quick in replacing my (slightly used) belt pads with the smaller size.

Love my Whitney
This is an extremely comfortable pack that carries heavy weight extremely well. The numerous access panels on the pack are a real plus….no need for dumping out everything in your pack to find something. I love the separate pocket for a sleeping bag, but even better the fact that the bottom of the pack is made of rubber, which is essential if you re carrying a down sleeping bag that has to stay dry. From the hydration pocket, to the rubber bottom, to the numerous access panels, this is well thought out pack. This bag is ideal for anyone traveling long distances, or with lots of weight. I Love my Whitney!!!

Comfy, Sturdy, Roomy and Light…. all of the above!
Thumbs Up: - The feature I like the most about this is easy access points to your pack. No matter where you stuffed it, you can get to it in matter of seconds. Good for organization-freaks as well as messy-campers! - I have used this pack in snow, in heavy rain as well. I use Gregory rain cover, but even without it, it provided pretty good waterproofing. - Adjustable shoulder straps are very comfortable and I didn’t feel the pack even when I was carrying a week-long worth stuff in it. Thumbs Down: - Side water-bottle holder is not convenient. My Nalgene kept falling out of it and I had to just stop using it. Overall: But overall, I am pretty happy with this pack and I definitely recommend this to any serious hiker. It’s pricy of course, but you get what you paid for.

GREATEST Backpack
I have been using my brother in laws Whitney for the last two summers. Thought it was awesome so I bought my own. Can’t wait to load it up and head to the trail. I’m well into middle age and not in the greatest of shape but this pack makes carrying a 65+ pound pack out of the 10,400 foot range easy. This is like no other pack. I love it. By the way this site had the best price on the web, by a long shot. Great experience.

Product Reviews

Carrying your gear in the Gregory Palisade Backpack assures that your load is comfortably balanced and easily accessible while you’re in the woods on a week-long trip. One of Gregory’s most popular packs for extended trips, the Palisade includes a front pocket for organization and a sleeping bag compartment with a divider that can be opened for more space. When you’re making a quick side trip from camp, the lid converts into a fanny pack, so you can carry the day’s necessities. Because week-long trips are usually accompanied by heavy loads, the Palisade uses Gregory’s AUTO-CANT harness system to assure a perfect fit and ideal distribution of weight.

Comfortable
I bought the Palisade to fill a particular niche in my gear closet. I was torn between the Palisade and the Arc’Teryx Bora 80. I tried very hard to talk myself into the Arc’Teryx. I came down on the Palisade side for two reasons: (1) comfort, and (2) capacity. I do my backpacking in desert conditions, so I don’t have much extra padding from clothing. The Palisade felt better on my back and rode slightly better than the Bora 80. It also has a slightly larger capacity. If I were buying a pack for us in a wetter or colder climate, I’d choose the Arc’Teryx pack in a hot second. The Bora 80 has superb waterproofing (it’s a big dry bag, and a couple of layers of clothing would probably provide the additional comfort I wanted. And the Arc’Teryx is bombproof. I believe the Arc’Teryx takes the toughness crown between the two packs.

Great pack
I bought this pack approx. a year ago, and have used it on multiple backcountry trips, and it has been awesome. Comfort, versatility and capacity for week-long to 10-day trips has been perfect. I agree with the post about comparing with the Bora 80. I’ve used the Bora before, and it was way more bombproof, and was a little easier to access all the gear without tearing everything apart. Saving the hundred bucks was totally worth it for me though. Hasn’t let me down once.

Cheers to Gregory
I got this pack about a month ago, in time for a three day trip in the Adirondack High Peak region of New York. With an approximately 40lb load, this pack was very comfortable; Gregory really did a nice job with their methodologies for pack sizing and adjustment. I hiked for years with a friend who used the Shasta model, but I liked the idea of having a front pocket for stowing rain gear, which the Palisade accommodates nicely. Since the pack has an abundance of space, I look forward to using it on winter trips. One more thought: I was impressed by the workmanship that went in to making this pack.

great pack
This pack has come with me for 2 month long trips to New Zealand, multiple sections of the AT, and much much more. Its held up just fine for the two years I’ve owned it. The suspension system works beautifully and carries heavy loads. In my book gregory packs are the best.

Like all Gregory packs, the Shasta’s fit and comfort are really the secret to its popularity. An adjustable waistbelt and rotating shoulder harness move to accommodate the angle of your hips, the slope of your shoulders, and the width of your neck. They work together with two aluminum stays and a floating framesheet to deliver the cushiest ride this side of a Cadillac. Climbers will like the dual daisy chains and ice axe loops, while skiers will appreciate the way the V-pull compression straps hold their skis. The floating top pocket means you can overstuff the pack but still close it up.

“V” is for Versatile.
I broke in my Gregory Shasta backpack up in the John Muir Wilderness July 2-8. This pack is awesome!. I am 6′-1″ and went for the medium. My torso measurement is 19″ which is right on the border between med amd lg. I was carrying 55lbs and had plenty of room for the trek. I had a day of fine-tuning and I then got it right for the rest of the hike (I strongly recommend a 1-day trek for fine-tuning prior to extended trips). The auto-cant harness system and adjust-a-cant waist belt allowed me to custom-fit my pack to my body and carrying load. I found that I could fine-tune the weight-bearing areas of my waist and shoulders to always be comfortable. The flo-form harness and waistbelt was extremely comfortable and the aerotech mesh backpanel kept my back very cool and dry. I love the top and bottom access to the pack and my sleeping bag packed well at the bottom. The top of the pack includes a removable fanny pack for quick day hikes. Overall, the Gregory Shasta backpack is a great value and is very comfortable. I recommend it for extended trips in the backcountry.

get your kibble here
Once, I hiked 600 miles on the AT with this pack, from Katahdin to Massachusetts. Soon after the 100 Mile Wilderness, where I carried 10 days’ supply, I mailed home the removable daypack on top. The Shasta is a bit too heavy for my liking, but practically bomb proof, without lotsa straps and such. For large packs, I prefer GoLite, which give you cubic inches while cutting down on one of your heaviest items, the pack. Notably, the top compartment has proven to be one of my most reliable daypacks, tested in the Northwoods, Utah’s high deserts and the Mayan Mountains of Belize. A worthy investment, indeed.

Most comfortable
I have owned three diferent packs, and I was finally happy that I found a match to my torso. I guess the third is a charm. Well in did it has been a charm, excellent design, weight distribution is superb, I had a 35lb load on a 3 day trip, didn’t even feel it, and what surprised me the most, the space between the pack and my back kept it very cool and not soaked in sweat. This baby has it all.

Good thiing I had a Shasta!
I needed a pack to take with me on multi-day fishing trips. I read dozens of reviews and chose the Shasta because buyers consistently raved about its durability and suspension. I wasn’t disappointed. However, I’m not a seasoned hiker, I only hike to get to the fishing spots. I decided to hike from White Wolf (in Yosemite) to the Tuolomne River. The 8 mile hike wasn’t bad, and even the 3700 ft elevation was endurable. I didn’t weigh the pack, but I’m guessing was 20-25 lbs. The dumbest part was thinking I could make a day trip out of this! I left the river at 5:00, giving myself 4 hours to get back to the camp. 8 hours later, at 1:00 am, I arrived. My legs were rubber, but I had no blisters or burns from the pack. It’s hard to imagine completing the trip with a pack that didn’t fit like a glove. In the future I will be much smarter about trip planning, but at least I know I have the right pack.
