all right as emergency shelter
This Bivy is fine if you don’t want to use it on day-to-day basis. The hood is kind of narrow to get in (guess it is really waterproof for that). It is difficult to enter with a bulky sleeping bag and once inside you don’t have a lot of space to close the sleeping bag and adjust the cords. It might be alright during the summer with a smaller sleeping bag - I haven’t tested that yet. How ever I am not impressed with it during winter trips.

This bivi bag has been used on a scottish walking trip where an overnight bivi was required, as you would expect it rained heavily but the bivi bag kept me very dry with very very little condensation on the inside so the breathable conduit sl fabric performed excellently. The rain just runs off it with not a drop getting through. If you want a very light very waterproof bivi then this is for you.

M.H. Conduit SL Bivy
After purchasing the Black Diamond Winter bivy that uses Nextec’s Epic fabric, I decided to compare it to the Mountain Hardware bivy that uses the Conduit SL fabric because of the condensation that I experienced inside. They both seemed to breath equally during my comparison in 50% humidity and 55 degree night time temps. The careful design of the Mtn. Hrdwr. bivy seemed to be more waterproof, versatile and comfortable. On my recent Sierra Trek, I liked the full length side zipper (opposed to a shoulder zip) that matches any post 1998 #8 YKK zipper. It made sleeping more comfortable because I was able to open the zipper at my feet or head to cool & vent efficiently and I could get in & out more easily. The hood fit snugly around my bag’s with a drawstring cinch (as opposed to a zipper). The M.H. bivy’s seams are taped and the floor is much more waterproof than Nextec’s fabric. I would recommend adding the scant 9 ounces for the extra comfort & protection.

I take it everywear
This thing has become my sleeping bag s new skin. Just zip it on and never worry about water again. I’ve used it in the winter and summer in the mountains and on the coast. This thing makes your down sleeping bag rock solid. One thing I learned is just put it on your bag before you leave and save some room in your pack.

Nice , but…
Good bivy, especially if you have a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag that zips to it. A little heavy if you want the minimum. I’m 6′, and it was too short. Also, when I put it over my old Marmot Snow Goose Sleeping Bag, it got way too compressed. I sent it back.

Just Okay
The Conduit SL Bivy kept me dry, except for my face or whatever part of me was not tucked inside. If I had a second chance, I would purchase a bivy that kept the bivy off my face.

Big Tent for Big Guys - This tent is extremely well-constructed and pretty light given its size.True Mountain Hardware quality. Easy to set up and an amazing array of windows zippers etc. This is very comfortable and unlike most “3-man” tents you could actually sleep 3. But at 6′4″ I like some room and headroom and its perfect for two people who need that. My only complaint is that there is no real vestibule for cooking or heating water on crappy days or before you head out.

No Brainer - This is the best tent I have ever owned. A little heavy but solid as a rock. Just returned from a canoe trip on the Thelon River on the tundra barrens of the Northwest Territories. Had a tough day or two. High winds sleet. I was thanking my lucky stars I had this tent. Dry as a bone stakes out solid in heavy winds. Can’t possibly be a more solid tent on this planet. You will not be dissatisfied.

Mountaineering design with 3 season versitility - I used the Trango tent on a recent trip to Mt. Olympus is Washington state. The first night was clear and the ventilation offered with the doors rolled back and the rainfly off was perfect. The next night weather had moved in and the rainfly was needed. Even with three occupants the tent never had the formation of that fine dew layer that comes with confined quarters and limited ventilation. The combination of multiple doors on the rainfly allowed us to adjust the ventilation pattern to get a good nights sleep without waking up all soggy.

Wow! - I bought this tent expecting to be pleased. Not having test it through any snow i cant say how it handles it. But on a trip we experienced some pretty foul weather. with nearly 4 days of constant rain and winds of close to 60 m/h this tent held up beautifully. didn’t budge or leak. had no condensation issues at all and am thoroughly impressed.

Excellent ! - Just did the first test of my Trango 2. Went camping in Maine for 6 nights. Very solid construction and quick setup. Size is very decent for two people even with my long and extra wide sleeping bag. Ventilation is also pretty good for an expedition tent. A very satisfied Altrec and Mountain Hardware customer.

Awesome tent - I spent 3 months wilderness backpacking and I didn’t have a single problem the whole time. It stood against extreme winds on top of mountians and kept me dry at night during 4 days of downpouring. Can’t think of a better tent.

This tent rocks - Very solid tent. I have been in many brands but this is by far my best tent ever. Set up is much faster than other four season tents. My tent is from the Imax days on Everest. And it is in exellent condition considering it has been in many winter storms. And if you know were the Cape Breton Highlands are we are talking big winds off the ocean. I just bought the new Tarango 2 can’t wait to try it out.

The best tent I’ve had - This tent when set up and staked out seems indestructable. I have never felt so comfortable in a tent before. I realy like all the storage places available. There are pockets all along the walls and the shelves at the two ends…Great Tent!

Great Tent! - As a person who has spent many nights on the upper glaciers of Rainer in very high winds(75+)and snow I give this tent two thumbs up we have never had a moment of fear that our tent wouldn’t hold up and unlike many of the other reviewers it could be a matter of life or death if it didn’t hold up.

Great Choice for High Altitude - I’ve used Trango 2s and 3s at high camps and elsewhere on McKinley and in Bolivia (Illimani and Huayna Potosi). They are spacious rugged and reliable in all conditions. Mountain Hardwear really pays attention to details and it shows with these tents. They’re not light but for high altitude and bad weather are a great choice.

I woke up in a parking lot! - I was camping in Washington and let me tell you mountain hardwear makes a mean tent. I slept through a thunderstorm and the tent didn’t leak but I was suprised to find when I woke up that I was in a Shopping Center Parking lot. The wind tumbled me 6 miles it was terrible but I didn’t notice it until I woke up. Great Tent Mountain Hardwear I should remember to steak it in next time.

Liked the original so well that I bought the recent model also. - This tent is a little heavy but it is a three season tent with four season capability. Works perfectly for late fall and early winter where you can expect thunderstorms or early snow with wind and be a perfect haven for two. I bought the updated version with vented doors for a little more air movement in warm weather.

Hammerhead 2 tent and Hammerhead 2 Footprint - This was my first tent purchase and the customer service and chat was great in the decision making. It was used in a recent 4 day hunting trip night time temp was 22 degree’s with light rain. The hammerhead held up and stood its ground and since it was a two man tent I was able to keep all my gear dry and out of the weather. I was also impressed with the weight no big issues of packing it in. A two thumbs up.

Enjoy outview in tent - You can see stars in the sky when you lie in the tent. It’s wonderful camping experience. If it’s cool or rainy you use fly to keep warming. I recommand you buy footprint togrther when you order tent. It will be very useful when ground camping.

great tent — packs too big - I mostly liked the two doors the two vestibules the huge mesh area its length I’ stand 6′ foot 4″ and above all the roll— up fly. But I did not like the length of the poles when packed up. The crooked pole packs to as much as 60cm/ 23.5″) unless put under tension (51cm/ 20””). Btw the MHW specs claim it’ packs to 17”” no way. Bottom line: It fit my pack rather awkwardly. I ended up buying a different tent.

Mountain Hardwear: Hammerhead 2 Tent - Altrec shipped and delivered as promised. Thanks! I’ve only used this tent once so far. It is easy to set up and the fly makes the tent bomb proof in the wind. I used the tent at 12 000 feet in gusty winds with temps overnight into the low 40’s. Stayed warm inside and didn’t flap very much in the wind. I did pin the fly tight to the ground which made the vestibule area pretty small. With all 2 man tents these days it would be a tight squeeze with two. For one lots of room for pack and boots inside. Good interior height. A little heavy if your going to pack it ( 9 pounds w/footprint). Also need to pick up some extra stakes. It is supposed to come with 10 either I lost one or it came with 9. Either way you need more maybe 14 or so for a full install. May try the footprint - fly option for summer backpacking to save a few pounds.

Wicked small and wet vestibule - Just got back from a trip in Canada. We have the Hammerhead 3 very spacious inside and held up to 20-25 mph sustained winds with higher gusts well. Great ventilation and versatility in dry weather. The tent performed quite well with the exception of the tiny vestibule. Unzipping it tended to dump water in the tent entrance door. I would rate the tent as a 5 star for most condiitons except entering and exiting during rain and mist

Great tent - Very well built tent. Set up is easy and fast tent has great ventilation. Plenty of head room and easy entrace and exit with two door. Vestibules have plenty of room for gear. First night I stayed in tent we had some heavy hail and the tent held up great not one problem.

Hammerhead 2 Paradigm - Mountain Hardware did their homework. This tent offers exceptional “V to the 3rd Power” (views ventilation versatility). It is comfortable with enough length (98″!) and width to easily accomodate my 6′2″ 195lb frame. Headroom is exceptionally high and sidewalls are steep and unobtrusive. What you have is a greenhouse-like SPACE for two - unlike some two person ultralights. Set up is a snap weight is low fabrics and hardware are beautiful well designed and high quality. Frustrated with many tent designs I began to contact the major tent manufacturers with detailed suggestions. During the process I ran across the Hammerhead 2 in an ad in the Backpacker Magazine 2002 Gear Guide. Two weeks later we saw it and bought it at Galyan’s for $147.90 (wholesale). After use we sent the tent body back to Mountain Hardware for a minor modification: zippored mesh doors added to the inside of the solid panel doors already included (total cost still below retail). Now it’s a true convertible but better than my previous favorite tent - a Moss Titan GT. The 36×8x8 sq. ft. Hammerhead 2 is superior to the Titan (now MSR Superfusion). It is lighter has two doors (easy in-out for two) two vestibules (more gear storage options) and more overhead mesh for stargazing. In fact it has more viewing versatility period. The windowed rainfly folds back over the roof with no vestibule hoop to contend with. This yields an awesome 270 degree spherical view of the stars and ground area around the tent. Pitch the Hammerhead away from trees and with the front facing your chosen view. You’ll be inspired. You’ll wonder why the Hammerhead took so long to get here. My wife loves it. My kids love it. I have to hump it and since its has all the features we appreciate and is in a relatively small packaged size - I love it.

Weather worthy tent - I’ve had the MHW hammerhead 2 tent for about three years and it’s been in countless heavy wind(20-35mph+winds) and in heavy rain storms. I also use it in winter and have had no problems with it in winter conditions. The hammerhead tent has performed when I’ve needed it the most. The inside of the tent is roomy even with two 6ft. persons in it. The tent has great ventilation and is roomy inside.

Greatest tent ever! - I have owned the Lightwedge tent now for 5 years and just had to seal the seams for the first time. I’ve put it through rain sleet and four feet of snow ( however we did wake up with the roof of the tent only six inches from our noses on that one) and she’s held up. I would definitely reccomend this tent to anyone.

From Everest to Alaska…. - As an expedition doctor I have found this tent to be exceptional as my home in the most hospitable environments. It is large roomy and comfortable for the hustle/bustle around basecamp. It takes a little time to set up at first but once you’ve got the system down you’re set for good. It doesn’t have a floor which is a nice weight saver so if you needed a little more protection you can buy a regular piece of nylon or tarp which works just fine. Unbeatable.

Excellent tent for Two - As the remnants of Hurricane Rita pushed north over central AR I was camped atop Mount Magazine the state’s highest point at 2 730 feet in my brand new Light Wedge 3. After learning the forecast for the stormy night ahead I did everythg I could think of to stormproof my tent determined to stay dry inside for some eight hours of extraordinary wind and rain. At 9 pm under light steady rain I crawled in knowing that the more comfortable (and safer) sleeping option would be my Toyota minivan. Howling winds and heavy rainfall awakened me several times after midnite but the Mt. Hardwear tent and its sturdy fly stayed put with its interior perfectly dry until I emerged into a misty rain at dawn on 9-25-05. (Winds of 30 mph were reported that night at Mount Magazine State Park.) I feel the Light Wedge 3 deserves a five star rating for wind and rain resistance and could’ve easily kept 2 people as dry as I was.

I can’t say enough good things…. - I have owned my tent for two years now and have yet to find something I don’t like. This tent does it all at an affordable price. What I like most is the fact that this tent will keep you dry if cared for properly. I endured 3 days of steady rainfall and did not experience a leak. I would recommend puchaasing the optional footprint to aid in weather resistance and to prolong the life of the tent floor. The footprint also gives you other setup options in warmer weather where bugs will not be an issue. The tent is light wait and simple to set up. I would like to see zip in panels to cover up the ample screens that cover this tent. Although this would add to the weight and cost I beleive it would make it an even more versitile tent.

Killer tent for a killer price! - This tent is definately a winner. It was really easy to put up and definately enough space for three people. I really like the weight it is not so heavy for a 3 person tent. I love the built in gear loft and pockets very handy. This is definately a killer tent for a killer price.

Good tent nice big vesitbule - I bought this tent as a roomy 2 person tent and it definitely fits the bill. It has a HUGE loft built in which is very nice. We use it to put stuff sacks and dirty clothes. Also plenty of little pcokets for holding things. Not much heavier than my tiny tent from before like darker colored fly for early mornings.. makes the sun seem less intense to wake up to.

Easy set-up; great durability - This is the easiest tent I’ve ever had to set up. Just two tent poles and that’s it! We used the rain fly on the first night we ever used the tent and we were warm and dry inside. Here’s a tip - tie the zip chords to the rain fly before you head out to the campsite. You wouldn’t want to be caught in the rain and have to fuss with those. Also the screen on the door allows for great visibility but don’t let your 8-month old labrador see you inside the tent while she’s outside. Those paws wreak havoc on the mesh window! Enjoy!

Best tent ever purchased - Not only is this tent easy to pitch in semi-darkness we really like the positioning of the screen windows which allow for great nightime star-gazing. Very roomy and comfortable for two people — no elbow jabs or knee knocks in the middle of the night and room to spare for miscellaneous gear and clothing. Rain fly is bulletproof too; the first night we used this tent we were caught in a deluge. Finally the color of the tent is nice and neutral - a good frame for the view outside. Very glad we purchased the footprint for this — highly recommend!

Great! - I am very happy I chose this tent. It is very roomy for two adults. I used it all summer traveling from pow-wow to pow-wow! Wish it would have rained at least once but it didn’t. Anyway when you take the fly off in the daytime the cool breezes really help in the cold evenings this tent was very warm! I got a great deal!

Built to do what it was designed for - If your looking for a one man “winter” mountaineering tent and your not much over 6′tall this may be the tent for you I was pleasantly surprised that my first night sleep was very comfortable considering that I had my pack boots and helmet inside the tent with me At 3.5 lbs the trade off is space.But the lite weight of the Bunker 1 makes it a lot easier to carry.It is built amazingly strong.

very happy with my space station - I have winter camped in my SS now much of this winter. The tent is basically as advertised; very durable and well made. And BIG. It is still single walled however and tends to sweat inside. I think the assembly instructions could use some improvement but this is excusable. You MUST waterproof this tent since it will leak like a sieve until you do. (Waterproofing kit included and it really works). I sewed a floor onto my SS to keep out mice and cold and it is a good idea. All in all well done Mountain Hardwear!
