The new MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe features MSR’s Total-Traction frame, which provides excellent 360-degree grip with its aerospace-grade aluminum. These one-of-a-kind snowshoes are the lightest in their class. MSR’s Televator heel lifter minimizes calf fatigue on steep terrain, so you can climb longer and farther. The simple step-on binding fits most boots securely. True-Hinge steel crampons provide stability and keep the heel from drifting, giving you a more natural stride and preserving your energy. MSR used completely waterproof materials so that every feature remains easy to use, even in wet, freezing conditions.

Product Reviews

Excellent Backcountry Snowshoe
Because I use both the MSR LA and new Atlas 12 snowshoes, I thought a review to allow comparison of the two might be useful. Both are backcountry or approach models and not for the casual user. The MSR has a unique feel because of the cookiecutter like action of its vertical rails. It excels on soft to firm snow and is very stable on a soft snow traverse. Overstepping the inside rails can be perilous because the serrated rails do not easily slide off one another. On hard snow to ice, traction falls off somewhat because you cannot kick a firm step as you can with typical underfoot crampons. The MSR has excellent flotation for a 25" shoe, it is light and packs very flat. My only criticism is that the binding is old- school and allows the boot to creep forward over distance, causing the heel to move off center. Otherwise, the MSR is a good backcountry choice.

THE cadilac of snowshoes
I have used MSRs for a long time, and the Lightning Ascents are my favorites now. Very light, super strong and hold in even the iciest of snow conditions. Hardly feel like I have anything on my feet, really easy to put on, and the ascent bar is an amazing help when going up consistently steep terrain.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes
I might be biased ssing as these are the first snowshoes i’ve purchased, but they are freakin’ sweet. excellent traction on ice and packed snow (they shine here) and pretty good on the fluffy stuff too. i’m looking forward to steep hills to give the Televator function a good test. MSR makes grerat gear and these are no exception.

these snowshoes are terrific.
having used Atlas before I was throughly impressed by the much improved traction and performance overall of the LIGHTNING ASCENTS. The TELEVATOR option was sweet going up steep climbs in So. Lake Tahoe area up semi icy slopes (with my ski poles helping out too). Very light and agile and decent float for a 25"…Im only 150 lbs so even with a decent size pack on they still performed well although if I was a big guy you may need more float if you’re in UTAH or really fluffy stuff…in the SIERRA CEMENT of CA these work fantastically. KUDOS MSR.

MSN Lightning Ascent
Just field tested our MSN Lighting Ascent snowshoes in Yosemite over a wide variety of terrain and snow quality. They are what they claim - "ultra light" and easy to maneuver, outstanding crampon grip (ascent and descent), especially over icy terrain, and equipped with the easiest bindings ever! One major trial remains for absolute satisfaction: trekking in snowy and extreme windchill conditions to check whether ice accumulates on the front crampons. All in all, an excellent shoe!

With the lightweight, high-traction MSR Lightning Snowshoes on your feet, steep, snowy terrain feels like a walk in the park. The Lightning snowshoe is made with an aircraft-grade aluminum frame that’s powder-coated to keep snow from sticking to it. 360 Full-wrap traction makes steep, icy slopes as solid as a flight of stairs. At only 3lb 2oz (22in), this MSR snowshoe is the lightest in its class. With its excellent traction and lightweight design, the Lightning snowshoe is ideal for both advanced winter travelers and beginners looking to explore the snow-covered trails.

Product Reviews

light and sticky
These snowshoes are super light…you barely feel ‘em on your feet. They also provide excellent traction on both loose snow as well as stiff snow or ice (think crampons). The bindings are easy to take on and off and secure. I wonder a little bit about the durability of the rubber in the bindings as well as the platform, but one thing I do know is that MSR stands behinds their products, so I don’t worry too much about it!

Sweet
After trying out several other snowshoes, I decided on the lightning and I’m glad I did. These are extremely lightweight snowshoes that are a bit skinnier than others, so if you want a more natural stride, this is the way to go. The absence of a spring loaded pivot keeps snow from flinging everywhere and the roughly 45 degree stop point for the pivot makes turning around and stepping over obstacles a breeze. You can probably tell by looking at them, but the traction provided by the vertical blade style frame beats all the others I’ve tried (name any major manufacturer). The bindings are incredibly easy, you can even strap in wearing mittens if need be. Due to the binding style, they also stack neatly on top of one another to take about half the space of a traditional pair. When I got these, MSR did not make a 30" shoe with the televator, which would be a nice addition. Highly recommended nevertheless.

The best snowshoes money can buy - 2007
It’s hard to go past MSR Lightnings. I have owned 5 different snowshoes over the last 20 years of so. The Lightnings are the best I have ever used. I have the 30" model for great flotation in deep soft snow. MSR Denali’s are also very good especially if the snowcover is thin and rocks protrude. MSR Denalis are just about indestructible. However they don’t have the flotation or the side slope stability of the Lightnings. The bindings are simple but effective.

Product Reviews

Feather Weight
These snowshoes are so lightweight that you barely feel like you have anything strapped on to your boots. The bindings are fantastic and didn’t budge on a recent 6 mile trek. They are super compatible with my snowboarding boots. The amount of traction was surprising compared to past snowshoes I’ve used…they have serious crampons. Awkward at first, but after a few miles was much appreciated.

The MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe is incredibly efficient for snowshoeing in steep terrain thanks to its Televator heel lifter. When the going gets steep, just pull up this heel lifter, and your foot will remain flat even when you’re walking straight up a steep incline. Keeping your feet flat also reduces the stress on your calves, so you can travel further. Available tail attachments increase flotation in deep snow. The MSR Denali Evo Ascent snowshoe has a powder-coated steel crampon which sheds the stickiest snow and bites into hardpack with ease.

Product Reviews

side hillin
The most noticeable advantage of these shoes is on the side hill. The crampon style limits the heel from slipping out. Which is a big problem with Tubbs and other tube style frames. The heel elevators are a must on steep terrain. It makes a steep slope more like stairs than a ski run, enabling you to hike farther into the backcountry. Had mine two seasons and love them!

it’s all about options & flexibility
this is a great shoe. clean, simple, lightweight design. I’ve shoed on the fluffy stuff, the crunchy stuff, and everything in between. this shoe is easily to position correctly on the foot and has never come close to falling off. the rubber hook & eye straps make mittened hands a non-issue. no more knotty laces! the ascent heel lever is useful on steep inclines, but i haven’t found it necessary on moderate hills. i do, however, like the fact that it is there, just in case. would i recommend this feature absolutely. the added bonus: attachable flotation tails for fresh powder. you just don’t get that option on models by other companies. to me, this shoe is all about options and flexibility. it is completely practical and i’ve yet to be disappointed by it.

Tough Shoes
Recently switched from Altas and I’m extremely happy. With flotation tails you can trek though powder extremely well. these stick to the ground much better, allowing me to ascend and descend much faster and safer. Highly recommended

Ugh, look for the real ones
I tried some of these out and they were a huge disappointment. I’m not saying I expected to feel like I was walking on water, but they really didn’t help with my footing at all. I was on snow a couple feet deep and they would punch through the top crust and then sit in the snow awkwardly. These things just kind of twist around in the snow. My parents’ have a set of Atlas snowshoes with metal frames. They offer better footing than the MSR ones.

MSR’s XGK EX Camp Stove boils water quickly in extreme environments, and runs off different fuel types for your international travels. The XGK EX Stove’s new flexible fuel line allows this stove to fit in a 1.5L MSR pot so you can fit more into your pack, and retractable legs and pot supports provide stability while you’re cooking. MSR’s high-output multi-fuel burner uses white gas, kerosene, and diesel.

Product Reviews

Backpacking Blowtorch
I’ve been using my XGK EX Stove for the last 4 months, in that time I’ve spent a total of 3 weeks on the trail from the Sea of Cortez to Seattle, Wa. The weight of the stove is good, not as light as others but a good compromise considering the range of fuels it will burn. The burner works well with all three fuel cells available from MSR and burn time is good as well. Over all it’s a good choice if your looking for a high out put multi-fuel stove. The one down side is there is no simmer function, it’s full throttle or nothing. However all I do is boil water with it. Lastly it’s louder than any stove I have ever used, but that lets you know it’s working.

Product Reviews

Greatest multi-fuel for the Price!
This stove is bomb-proof. It’s more efficient than canister stoves in a wider range of circumstances. Ever had half-empty canisters with no more accelerant after a winter trip Never waste fuel again with this stove! It boils fast and furious, and can go from a rolling boil to a simmer instantly. That’s right, you can cook angel-hair pasta, rice, potatoes… virtually anything you can pack with this stove. I have been using it for about a year now and have had no problems.

Very Versatile Stove — Solid!
Have owned this stove for several years and used in all weathers - from 5 degrees and snow to driving rain - and it has performed flawlessly. Maintenance has been minimal and temperature control is outstanding — and validated by my pastry-chef-camp- pal! Stable, relatively light weight and very fuel efficient. The only items causing this to fall short of a perfect score are the relative frailty of the pump (shattered my first one with a short fall off a rock) and the loudness of the stove when on full afterburner. Otherwise, though, top-notch!

incredibly great stove
on my last backpacking trip, i was able to borrow my friend’s dragonfly, and while i probably will not be able to afford one, i was incredibly impressed by its SOLID performance. even despite my stupidity, i was able to get it started and cruising every time without a problem, even in strong winds and dampness. it boiled water quickly, and the simmer function works very well. my only qualm is the stove’s size - if you’re going to be just boiling water or doing other super simple cooking, you’d be better off with a smaller, lighter, and cheaper MSR stove. great though if you’re a backcountry chef and like doing fancy things with your cuisine. either way - highly recommended.

BUY THIS STOVE
I’ve had the dragonfly for 6 years. During those 6 years I’ve tested and sold other stoves from Vaude, Snow Peak, Coleman etc. I have yet to find a stove that is as durable and versatile. Great temp control. EASY SET-UP. Use it all year long. Handles several fuels. I cannot say enough. Time and time again I come back to using this stove. Electronic starters on other stoves are nothing more than a gimmic. Don’t get wrapped up in them. They do not work half the time anyway. Fuel canisters are a pain in the butt. You always end up with half used canisters laying around. With the dragonfly you can refill your fuel bottles. You’ll end up happy you bought this stove, do not let price deter you.

Great little stove!
I just took my first trip with this guy- light weight, sips the fuel and heats up quick. Very, very pleased with it. Make sure to buy a fuel bottle to go with it.

Product Reviews

great, hot and light
This is a great stove and I would only buy an MSR stove for any kind of serious backcountry usage. The stove doesn’t simmer in the sense of your kitchen stove (at all), but it’s not too bad compare to the torch-like power of other MSR stoves (good tip from SandyBeach to use low pressure). But great for all conditions, boils water FAST and still can cook normal food on it too. Very light, field maintainable and you can be sure that MSR stands behind it’s products — I’ve got lots of their gear and have only good things to say about their products and customer service! And no, I don’t work for them… just a big fan! Great stove!

ok
light. Does not simmer. otherwise fine.

Great Little Stove
The Simmerlite is a very versatile and powerful little stove. Also very light and compact. One trick that MSR doesn’t really tell you about is to use very low fuel pressures (about 5 pumps or less)for a delicate flame. With a low enough flame I can cook perfect omelets on this stove. Burner size is good for medium to larger pots. May be almost too big for individual cooksets.

Product Reviews

Wish it would fit in the Kettle
A great stove for a quick trip - I have used it on a series of trips - mainly day hikes where all I want is a hot cup of coffee at lunch. However, be aware that if you put the Pocket Rocket into it’s red triangular shaped plastic container - as per the photo - the stove IN ITS red container will definitely NOT fit into the Kettle with the lid on. This means you have to leave the stove in the kettle without the protection of the plastic cover and then hope it doesn’t rattle around in the kettle to the point that it gets damaged (and annoys you with the sound of it rattling in the kettle in your pack). You then have to place the Pocket Rocket in your pack in its container as a separate item. I would like to see the kettle a fraction higher to allow the Pocket Rocket to fit in its red triangular container and then in the kettle with the lid on. Otherwise a great unit - just annoying that it doesn’t all fit together as per the photo.

light weight hassle
I got the Pocketrocket w/Titan Kettle to save .5 lbs over jet boil. In real life the PR is not as efficient and was a hassle to protect from the wind. A canister of fuel last 5 days with PR and 7-8 days without a PR. The stove with case would not fit in kettle.

To keep up with globetrotting adventurers who want to get around unencumbered, MSR made a multi-fuel burning version of the WhisperLite International Stove. Go ahead, use white gas, kerosene, or unleaded auto fuel this stove burns all. MSR added a large-diameter fuel line just in case poor quality fuel is your only option. Shaker Jet technology ensures that the stove jet cleans easily with a simple shake. The 15.5oz WhisperLite International Stove fits into a 1.5L MSR pot, so you’ll hardly know it’s in your pack.

Product Reviews

Good stove
I’ve had this stove for several years now and have been very pleased with it. It is very light and packs up small in the included sack. The MSR fuel bottles are bomb proof and come in a large variety of sizes. I don’t feel comfortable, however, giving it 5 stars for a few reasons. The first is the fact that it takes a considerable amount of time to prime the stove, and after a long hike in the dark it can be frustrating. The other reason is that in my experience it needs to stay very clean to function properly, and I’ve had to replace several parts for this reason. Like I said this is a good stove, but not a great one. If you are in the market for a new stove, go with the best and buy the Jetboil PCS for only $10 more,

Killer Stove for the Ages
I’ve been using this stove for almost 10 years and have never been disappointed. I’ve used white gas and gasoline with and its always worked from sea level to 10,000+ feet of elevation. It requires some occasional maintenance, but thats the price you pay if you use the same piece of equipment frequently. I hope to use it for another 10 years.

Seasoned veteran
I’ve used this stove from the southern tip of South America to northern Alaska. It works well with all sorts of fuel - from petrol to kerosene to white gas (best). It can get finicky sometimes, but all you have to do is clean it out - which you can do in the field - or even just shaking it can do the trick. It boils water fast and works best when you need a lot of heat - it doesn’t simmer very well in my experience. Get this stove if you’re going to be at high altitudes, cold temperatures, or where you’ll be using different types of fuel.

You Could Almost Smelt Ore
It’s noisy, cantankerous, borderline obnoxious, and miraculous, all at the same time. With this stove you’ll almost never be able to simmer stew or have fondue in the shade of Mount Hood, but you will get a blow torch on a tripod that will boil concrete in about 15 minutes. I’ve had this stove for for years, and it has never disappointed, failed to cook a meal, quickly melt snow, or make cool baby jet engine noises. It s easy to clean, packs small and light, and sets up on uneven surfaces. The MSR stove works, always, and without fail, no matter how poorly I treat it. Truly, the best stove running.

Good, light stove
I have used this stove with Coleman Fuel only so far. Good points: It boils water quicker than I expected, even at 2000m altitude. It is very light and packs inside a pot easily. Not so good points: It is difficult to set a good flow for simmering without the flame going out. You have to explain to your camp-mates how to use it, even if they say they know how. You can get pretty big flames if you don’t prime it right.
