Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/5.small.gif" /> I really liked liked this tent! - Easy to put up.. kept me dry in horrible rain storms.. great pockets for storage..room to stand up.. plenty of air ventilation in 95 degree heat.. I finally found a tent I love

great features poor performance - I have been an avid backpacker for 20+ years and have always sought out the best equipment; recently my wife and I had a baby which has completely changed the way we look at our gear. Buying a large (affordable) family tent has been an adventure all on its own. When the Bedouin 6 arrived I was thrilled. The set-up was a snap storage amazing and the light colored fabric allowed great visibility inside. We have since gone on two outing and my joy has diminished. Our first trip saw wind and rain. While we stayed dry the fly (even when tightened fully and guyed out) flapped and water pooled on the top. Also once the fly was tightened it pulls down on the top tent poles causing the inside tent walls slack and not be taunt which is very annoying if you happen to be sleeping under it. Our second (and last as we are returning and starting our search all over again) trip we were next to a river very moist and cool when we woke the condensation was dripping from the fly ceiling through the mesh on to us. I’m not sure if we some how got a “bad tent ” as I have had many products made by SD and all have been of excellent quality the tent seems to have everything but just didn’t perform.

I love it - I went to Radium B.C. Canada with my two children 6 & 2yrs. I’m a single parent and having a tent that I could put up by myself was very important. I put up the tent in about 10min and it was a breeze to put up. The pockets inside are priceless when you have diapers wetwipes & bottles. It’s worth every penny.

Excellent for families of four–especially families with big kids–the Sierra Designs Bedouin 4 is a versatile camping tent that’s ideal for fishing and lounging around campgrounds. The Bedouin 4 weighs more than most backpacking tents, but this functional shelter offers more practical accessories than those discount sporting good tents. Our personal favorites are the hanging cup holders, a feature that seems a little superfluous until you spill your first bottle of Pinot across your rolling tent floor, sleeping bags and spare clothing. The Lexan-sized cup holders keep beverages off the uneven floor to minimize spills. Other tents offer some sort of mesh attic shelf for gear, but the Bedouin 4 tent features gear pockets that extend from the floor to the ceiling to help keep eyewear, field guides, fly boxes and small toys from rolling underfoot. There’s also an internal clothesline that’s ideal for hanging up the outdoor wear that you intend to use again. Sierra Designs’ dazzling optic white canopy fabric allows additional light into the interior, making the atmosphere brighter and cheerier even on overcast days. Like other Sierra Designs backcountry tents, all fabric on the Bedouin 4 tent is treated with Tent Guard with Ultra Fresh for reducing mildew. If you’re looking for a camping tent that offers thoughtful features created by outdoor enthusiasts, the Bedouin 4 is a smart design for group camping and family outings.

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/5.small.gif" /> Great Tent - This tent is well vented and still kept the hard rain out. It was raining for days when we went camping last year. We had NO water anywhere on the inside of this tent. Easy to set up dries quickly and very sturdy in wind. Love this tent the last tent I’ll ever own.

It has everything… and is easy - It took me 10 minutes to set it up the first time and 5 minutes after that. Easy for one person really easy with two. I’m 5′5” and can stand up in it. Haven’t been in any serious weather yet but the fly comes low on the tent and know I won’t get wet. Great pocket space great to use if you aren’t moving every day. Can fit two roll-a-cots with room for the dog waders and dry bag.

A well designed tent & compact. - The tent was fairly easy to set up by myself. It is very compact & very lite-weight. Well designed & seems very sturdy. I have yet to put it thru much of a weather challenge but all reviews seem to give it a great rating in rain-proofness. It’s a good size for 3 men even w/ air mattresses & height is decent too.

The 2005 Outside magazine Gear of the Year award winner, the Sierra Designs Reverse Combi Tent offers extreme weight efficiency in an optimal space design. The high strength-to-weight ratio DAC pole, which is thicker at the dome and thinner as well as pre-bent down the sidewall, allows for near 50% greater living space. This unique design increases strength and saves weight. A dual door entry provides easy access to the multi-pitching, double-track zippered vestibule for convenience and increased ventilation. For quick set-up and 60% greater strength, color-coded webbing guides the pole placement, Swift Clip pole hooks allow for faster pre-stakeout, and Clip-Locs dynamically maintain pole intersections. One of the most tricked-out, two-person tents on the market, the Reverse Combi includes a Fast Pack Footprint, Portable Attic, and Coffee Sling.

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/5.small.gif" /> Great Tent - I used it for a weekend in the Eastern Sierras. It performed flawlessly. Keep me warm and dry. i like the fact it has a clothesline to hang up my damp clothes. good enuf space for 2 people as long as you keep your gear outside the tent. i would recommend it to my friends

While Sierra Designs classified their three-person, Sirius 3 as a three-season tent, the dual doors and big mesh walls make it easier to cool and vent than other alpine three-season climbing tents. This is a roomy design that’s ideal for camping, backpacking and climbing in moderate weather conditions, even if the wind kicks up. The Sirius 3 features Sierra Designs’ Quick Pitch Swivel Hub, a small metal swivel up top that locks the tent poles in place, adding as much as 60% more structural support than conventional crossover tent pole configurations. The Swivel Hub also simplifies pitching, so you’re less likely to have your poles crossed (in a bad way)–especially if you’re setting up camp in the dark. It features a two-door architecture inspired by CAD design that offers excellent cross ventilation. Your group can also sort hiking boots and climbing gear in the separated vestibules. Roomy gear pockets along the inside of the 31-square-foot interior space make it easier to sort out field guides, GPS components and other important stuff. One thing to keep in mind is that the Sirius series does feature an optional footprint (sold separately) for floor protection, but it cannot be pitched in a fly-only, fastpacking configuration. Considering that the packed weight is less than five pounds, many minimalist trios won’t care at all.

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/5.small.gif" /> Good Tent - I took the tent out for a few days and it meet all my expectations and more. The best part of the tent was the “air vents”. They allowed the wind to move through the tent to stop the build up of air. I did camp when it was dry out so I will have to see how it works with rain….but I have no fear as the vents are protected well. Not too big when packed but in all a nice sized tent to packed ratio.

Third season - We are starting our third season with the Sirius 3. It has plenty of for two adults and a dog or two. We have spent about 30 nights out and have had no problems. Yes Vesibules are a little small. But for two people there is plenty of extra room inside. Great tent great price.

Great Tent - The best tent on the market at this price range. Withstood 30-40 mph gusts without any vibrations and increadibly warm considering all the mesh lining. I would totally recommend this tent for any level backpacker. Plenty of room for 2 a bit tight for 3 though but for the wieght this tent is awesome. Vestibules are tiny but plenty of room inside. I see rain being a small factor due to the rainfly geometry but not considerable since one can simply draw the vestibule down.

a very light and affordable tent which still has space for three - This tent is easy to set up and the light weight makes it a great choice for backpacking. It porvides adequate ventilation though we haven’t tested it in a very hot weather. It may feel a little cramped for three large adults.

Fine for desert - We spent six nights in early September in Southern Utah’s Escalante region and the tent performed great. There are two convenient doors (no crawling over each other to get out; easy to load and unload packs at the same time)and the zippers work even when camping room doesn’t allow a perfect pitch. This light (especially when load is divided among two) inexpensive tent was perfect for four 50 degree nights and two humid drizzles. It stayed airy and dry and was easy to set up normally in 20 mph winds and in the dark. Both of us are 6′3″ and touch both ends when stretched out but the room allowed ALL our gear to sleep with us and left room for cards. Boots stayed under the small fly. Important for our trip…there are two sands in S. Utah soft and hard. We had the wrong size footprint (too small) and have some abrasion (pinholes) from the hard sand. The soft sand however did not blow inside despite the venting. Great to see the stars and surroundings when the fly is off. All in all intelligent tent for two big guys.

Tent footprints are great - There is not much to say about the performance of a tent footprint but since you asked . . . This footprint is great: it is the same size as the tent and protects the tent floor from abrasion. Getting a tent footprint is a great call because down the road after years of use you’ll be glad to need only a new footprint rather than a whole new tent.

After 3 months of use we are very happy with our purchase - So far we have used this tent on a good 7 or 8 trips. From below freezing weather at Yosemite (Toulomne Meadows) last weekend to over 100 degree weather at the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky and everything in between. This tent is very easy to set up comfortable for my family (it’s just three of us) and so far we have not experienced any condensation. we’ve only had rain once and we were bone-dry inside. My only two issues are: 1.the zippers tend to catch the fabric a little too often though you can minimize thie with experience and 2. it doesn’t fit inside my backpack (with all the other gear) so I have to carry it attached to the outside of my internal-frame Osprey backpack. Again not a big deal. I strongly recommend getting the footprint. Given that we were considering a $400 tent we are more than happy with the Sirius 3.

Great price on good tent - I can’t say great tent yet as I wont have the opportunity to try it in the sierra’s until June. But the buying experience at Altrec was great. I had initial doubts because in the past I have purchased my outdoor stuff elsewhere but the price and availability made me try Altrec. I got the tent within 4 days which is sooner than I thought via regular shipping. I put the tent up in the living room and it looked ready to go. The tent is advertised as a three man tent by Sierra Designs but I got it to function as a comfortable two man tent. I am 6′1 and my son is 6′0 we fit just fine with enough length and width to sleep comfortably. Three adults or even two adults and a kid would be a stretch. The design of the tent was solid as you’d expect with Sierra Designs. Pitching the tent was simple and having done it once I should be able put this freestanding tent up myself within 3-4 minutes. I really like Sierra Designs models. We had a SD Comet which we purchased 14 years ago which has functioned without a hitch. I just wanted something lighter now as the years have caught up with me. The Sirius 3 should fit the bill nicely at under 5 pounds.

best tent ever - It’s super light easy to set up and breathes well. I’ve used mine about two dozen times in climates ranging from the rainy NW fall to the hot SW summer. When it’s colder I simply don’t stake out the rainfly. Sure that means a little bit more condensation but the tent stays *warm*! In hot arid areas I leave the rainfly off completely and wake up to the warm sun on my face. It has problems in windy and rainy conditions; even if I set the tent up against the wind if it changes directions the rain might come through the rainfly. And yes the zippers snag. However for the price weight and roomieness you can’t beat this tent!

Great gear - I read a review on Backpacker mag. and got it on the website after sevral nights out of camping there is nothing else to say apart that it is a great tent and we fit in quite nicely I am 6′6″ and fell at ease inside I can move around since the headroom is well proportioned for my size the weight make it easy to carry as

The 2001 Backpacker magazine Editors’ Choice Gold award winner for utilitarian function and design, the Sierra Designs Meteor Light Tent is one of the most copied tents over the past twenty years. Not resting on it’s reputation, this tent is updated with a thicker diameter and thinner walled DAC pole that offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio available on the market. For quick set-up and 60% greater strength, color-coded webbing guides the pole placement, Swift Clip pole hooks allow for faster pre-stakeout, and locking pole tips maintain grommet contact during set-up. Classic dual door entry provides easy access to your gear, and promotes free-flowing ventilation throughout the roomy vestibule. With a peak height of 43 inches, the Meteor Light thankfully gives more maneuvering space for your hiking buddy ‘Too Tall’. Efficient, economical, and comfortable, the Meteor Light continues to be the standard with convenience design updates.

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/4.small.gif" /> Very versatile - First pitch in my yard was a bit confusing despite the instructions. They need better information regarding various rain fly configurations. This is a great tent for a guy my size (6′6″/240#). I consider it a very roomy one man tent. The two doors make it great on the trips where I have a tent mate. I wish the vestibule was a bit bigger. It is really tight trying to get out of wet gear before entering the tent. This is a great tent for canoeing where the “carries” are relatively short. I expect to have many years of good use from this tent.

Pitching a tent in the backcountry should be all about enjoying wide open spaces, not sleeping in confining places. Sierra Designs’ durable and versatile three-season Electron Tent is excellent for backpacking on trails and camping among towering forest trees. When you compare the dimensions with other reduced weight backpacking tents in similar sizes, it’s easy to see why tall backpackers and big climbers consider the Sierra Designs Electron Tent a favorite, especially in mild weather conditions. While the architecture is similar to the Sierra Designs Gamma Tent, the Electron Tent features a versatile second Stash Door for entry and access on both sides of the tent, so one person can exit without disturbing the other sleeping occupant. The Electron Tent includes a Fast Pack footprint for decreased weight on minimalist backcountry adventures in mild (but not cold) weather. Other favorite Sierra Designs extras include a coffee sling and portable attic. All fabric is treated with Tent Guard with Ultra Fresh for reducing mildew.

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/4.small.gif" /> Not enough stakes - A nice roomy 3 season tent maybe a littlr heavy at 5lb 10oz - only a pound lighter than my 4 season tent of about the same size!. The gear loft and stoage pockets are useful but I have no use for the coffee slings when backpacking they are with the larger family tent now. One minor niggle is that sierra desins do not supply a full set of stakes - enough for fair weather but not enough to guy out so budget a few bucks for a few extra stakes. overall nice and easy to put it up and bright and airy inside a plus for the supplied footprint and gear loft. I recomend this tent just short of 5* for lack of stakes.

Full Featured 2 man Tent - This is a great 2 man tent. It comes with the footprint gear loft and 2 drink holder slings. The layout is nice: good size vestibule on each side. No more crawling over your buddy to go to the bathroom at night. It also is very roomy. The floor space is good and so is the headroom. There are lighter tents but this is light enough and you won’t find another tent with all the features or accessories for $180.

Does what I need. - Good 3 season tent. Weight is acceptable and provides plenty of room. Good selection of add’l features to make you feel you got your money’s worth.

A proven pick among fair-weather backpackers and climbers, the award-winning Sierra Designs Lightning Tent offers some of the best crossflow ventilation available for two-person tents. This is a lightweight and remarkably stable tent supported by a pair of DAC Featherlite NSL poles, a stronger and lighter support design that features the highest strength-to-weight ratio among similarly sized aluminum tent poles. DAC Featherlite NSL poles feature locking pole tips to accommodate pole stress, so there’s less of a chance that you’ll be patching things up on the trail. Roomy gear pockets on the inside of the Lightning make it easy for two adults to separate their gear. If you head out during the hottest months of the year or prefer going minimalist in the desert, the Sierra Designs Lightning Tent can be a breezy shelter even when it swelters.

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/4.small.gif" /> Light - I was trying to find reviews before purchasing this as I’m always a cautious shopper. No luck however so I took the risk and bought it anyways. My advice to Canadians in purchasing this tent is to buy in the US. You will save big time even with paying the duties and taxes. SD messed up with their MSRP on this one 450 CAD vs 250 US this is a no brainer. As for the tent good living space easy setup and light. The fly doesn’t quite come all the way to the ground and the vestibule doesn’t peg out that great there’s about a 3 to 4″ gap above the ground when pegged out. You also need minimum of 3 pegs to use the vestibule two on the vestibule side and one on the opposite side to counter balance it. I had this tent out in the Andirondacks on the Canadian long weekend (May 22nd/23rd) in torential rain it survived however I was getting small droplets of water on the inside where the hooks meet the fly. Some tape would probably solve this. Not sure if this is typical in other tents in this price range but this did dissapoint me. I’m looking forward to testing it out in the rain again to see if this was the way I set it up or perhaps a flaw in the design. The tent was cozy for my girlfriend and I two big guys may be pushing it though. My feet and head were just grazing the edges and I’m 5-10.

Sierra thank you! - I have got this tent 4 weeks in the past. I live in Europe Sierra Desings is not availeble in whole europe so I did get it from the US. My first impression was: -Very good materials you can feel that when you toutch it. -Ultra light about 2.3KG (tent with footprint) -Outer tent PU coated on the inside Silicone coated on the outside so UV will do less damage than PU-PU coated Nylon! Impression when I used it: -Great living space to weight! (2 persons with 2 75L Bags is not a problem) -I used ut in summer conditions in the evening the temperature dropt from 20 celcius to 6 celcius in 2 hours! And not much condens at all the next day in the morning the tent had only a couple of water drops on the outer tent! (compare that to other tents in this price skill!) -Very easy to set up! The tent is up in 5 minutes! So as you readed BUY this tent if you want a perfect and almost weigtless tent! Thank you Sierra Designs!

leaky bugport at joining zippers - I bought this tent and returned it reluctantly. It was a beautiful tent but it had a a lf by half inch bug port where the zippers came together. I miss it. But the no seeum mesh won’t help if the door lets them in anyway. Going back to the old one zipper track design would make it workable.

great tent - used this tent in the wind heat and rain this summer in MIchigan. it does not vent hot air out like i would like. but if i soe a loop on the long ends to pull it out with a stake i think that will fix it just fine and fix the rain problems i had too. nice size tent for two used it packing for total of 10 days and sea Kayaking in Lake Supoir for 10 more. still like new.

Hey Sierra Designs here’s how to make this the best - Buy this tent if you can still find one. During REI’s annual sale this tent was only $169; of course I bought it. I own three 2 person 3 season tents including a quarter dome UL and a TNF Talus23; but this is my go-to tent. This tent has a fly-footprint option where the UL does not; and it is lighter than the Talus. Here are some suggested improvements: add a fly vent like the UL to solve the condensation issue go full mesh to save another ounce(no tent fabric is necessary) and add a provision for securing the fly door open (I run a string over the top of the tent to an opposite stake. But this is the best balance of features and weight I have ever seen. Highly recommend.

Nice light 3 season tent. - I like this tent. Most of the weight savings seem to come from the lighter material in the tent body and fly but it seems to be of good quality. I’ve seen reviews where people say it’s comfy for someone 6′3″ but i’m 6′ and that seems to be about the comfort limit. I’ve also read that it’s sturdy under snow/wind but I don’t believe that either - there just aren’t enough guyout points for serious wind. also there isn’t much vestiblue space but you know that going in. there are going to be some compromises in a sub-5 lb. tent. but i do love how light it is how simple and easy it is to pitch and also dig the one big door that makes getting in/out very easy. and contrary to some reviews there is one little pocket inside the tent. in essence it is what it claims to be: a very nice little 3 season fair weather tent.

Great tent - I just bought this tent and finally got to test it out to find out how great it is. I set it up in the rain and in the dark. It was fairly easy and only took about 5 min with 2 people. The rain didn’t bother us much but the seals were a little damp. I also have not put any type of sealer on this tent so considering that it did well. Two people will sleep comofortably in opposite head positions. With 2 people in it there’s not too much room left except for a couple of stuff sacks. The vestibule is on the small side. It was a cramped with both of our packs in it. One problem was getting them in there. To put it in the vestibule you almost have to be in the tent. Other than that the tent performed excellent.

Fabulous For Backpacking - Sierra Designs has outdone themselves again. This tent is so light it’s unreal and with a Granite Gear compression sack it condenses to the size of a cantaloupe–including the rainfly. Then I got an OR tent stake and pole bag and strap those pieces to the outside of my pack. Perfect. Extremely waterproof and strong in the wind. Inside it’s light and airy due to the colors–kind of cheerful. Setups fast and it’s so compact I can have the luxury of also using this as a roomy solo tent although 2 can fit in.

While the Sirius might be classified as a three-season tent, the dual doors and big mesh walls make it easier to cool and vent than other alpine three-season climbing tents. It’s a great design for camping and climbing in moderate weather conditions, even if the wind kicks up. The Sirius features Sierra Designs’ Quick Pitch Swivel Hub, a small metal swivel up top that locks the tent poles in place, adding as much as 60% more structural support than conventional crossover tent pole configurations. The Swivel Hub also simplifies pitching, so you’re less likely to have your poles crossed (in a bad way)–especially if you’re setting up camp in the dark. It features a two-door architecture inspired by CAD design that offers excellent cross ventilation. Besides having their own door, each of the two adult occupants also enjoy a separate vestibule for hiking boots and climbing gear. Gear pockets along the inside of the 31-square-foot interior space make it easier to sort out field guides, GPS components and other important stuff. One thing to keep in mind is that the Sirius series does feature an optional footprint (sold separately) for floor protection, but it cannot be pitched in a fly-only, fastpacking configuration. Considering that the packed weight is around four and a half pounds, most minimalists probably won’t mind. If you’re looking for a similar design with more vestibule space and plenty of accessories, check out the Sierra Designs Electron tent with included footprint, portable attic–and even a coffee sling!

Product Reviews

<img src=http://mirror.altrec.com/images/shop/reviews/bars/4.small.gif" /> A great deal for a great tent! - I got this tent about a year ago and haven’t had any problems. It’s lightweight easy to set up and really is waterproof. Don’t be a dummy though point it in the right direction. Having 2 doors is always a great idea and when you take the rain fly off and lay down while star-gazing you thank the good Lord you bought this steal-of-a-deal. My ONLY complaint is that the vestibule space is really lacking so if you’re hiking w/2 + gear you might want to make sure your pack and gear are protected from the elements. I would highly recommend this tent.

Nice price small pack size airy tent. - I was looking for 2 person self-standing and well ventilated tent for kayaking during spring and summer. I researched many tents and ended up buying this one as an impulse buy. It was new a cool design and a good price. I had to call Sierra Designs about another issue and ended up talking to an employee about the tent. He said he was unsure about the wet weather performance. My first trip out it rained all day. I set the tent up on a gravel bar making sure that the fly was into the wind and rain. That night it rained pretty hard and steady all night. In the morning there was no rain in my tent and I was still cool from the good ventilation. I recommend this tent highly however I would keep the fly pointed in the direction of bad weather.

very nice tent - I will be using this tent for a long time when I need more space. It is very well ventilated and has plent of space inside. The design is also very cool. It is also perferms very well in rain. Cons: It packs too big for me! If I didn’t hike solo more often than not this would be perfect because we could split up the weight. Unfortunatly I have to use a different tent while going solo.

Sierra Designs reliability - This is a great tent for summers in the back country. Sets up in minutes stays dry during light rain vents well. Use without the fly for bug free star gazing.

light weight and reliable - It is light on the pack and is easy to set up. There is plenty of room for two people. I love this tent.

It is a great tent!!! - It is light and compact and I carry it when I backpack.

Fantastic well ventilated strong tent!!! - We have used our tent only once - but we were camping by the beach so it was a good test. The tent is great especially the venting. Easy set up. Great tent. The shopping experience was also excellent. Thank you Sirius for your design. Thank you Altrec and Backpacker for great sites.
